Inside of the heart ablation

An ablation is the formation of a lesion on the inside or the outside of the heart. A lesion forms a barrier that can eliminate the areas for Afib. Ideally, a lesion would go all the way through the heart tissue. The more a lesion goes through the heart tissue, the more effective the barrier.

If successful, the areas of Afib are eliminated. Over the months following an ablation, the heart’s rhythm and function should improve.

There are two types of ablations:

It’s difficult for lesions to penetrate all the way through heart tissue when treated from just one side of the heart. That’s why Hybrid AF Therapy exists. Hybrid ablation combines epicardial and endocardial ablation creating lesions on both sides. Hybrid can be more effective in creating barriers for Afib.

Hybrid AF Therapy: Treatment for Advanced Afib

The FDA approved Hybrid AF Therapy as a safe and effective option to treat the estimated 4 million people with Advanced Afib. If your Afib has lasted for more than a year, there's hope for effective treatment, even if previous treatments have failed.

Hybrid AF Therapy with the EPi-Sense® device is the first and only FDA PMA-approved minimally invasive ablation therapy for long-standing persistent Afib patients.

How Hybrid AF Therapy Works?

Hybrid AF Therapy combines two types of ablation therapy to treat two key areas for Afib: epicardial and endocardial.

Endocardial radiofrequency (RF) or cryo ablation treats the inside of the heart at the pulmonary veins. This is a key trigger area for Afib.

Epicardial ablation treats the outside of the heart, on the back (posterior) of the atrium, another known trigger area for Afib.

By combining these two approaches, doctors can treat two important areas for Afib.

What is Recovery like After Hybrid Ablation?

The hospital stay is typically 2-3 days, your doctor will provide medication to prevent inflammation.

You can start taking needed heart medications after the procedure as directed by your doctor

You’ll receive a patient card with important information about your procedure, medicines and who to contact after you leave the hospital.

Your medical team will let you know when it’s okay to return to your normal activities.
